1967: a centennial gift
Caribana began in 1967, when members of Toronto's Caribbean community organized a celebration as their contribution to Canada's centennial (the country's 100th birthday). It drew on the carnival traditions the community had brought from Trinidad, Jamaica, and across the Caribbean.
From one summer to a tradition
What was meant as a one-time event was too joyful to end. Caribana returned year after year, growing from a modest gathering into a massive festival of mas bands, steelpan, and soca. Over the decades it became a fixture of the Toronto summer and a point of pride for the Caribbean diaspora.
Growth and change
As it grew, the festival's scale, organization, and even its official name evolved. Today it is formally the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, produced by the Festival Management Committee, while most people still lovingly call it Caribana. It now draws well over a million people and contributes significantly to the city's culture and economy.
A living legacy
Caribana's roots reach back through the community's history to the carnival tradition born of Emancipation. Every year it renews that legacy of freedom, creativity, and belonging.
