What is calypso?
Calypso is the older genre, rooted in Trinidad and drawing on West African traditions of storytelling and social commentary. Calypsonians are known for clever, witty lyrics — often satirical, political, or topical. The words are the star. Calypso is celebrated in tents and competitions during carnival season.
What is soca?
Soca emerged in Trinidad in the 1970s, credited largely to Lord Shorty (Garfield Blackman), who fused calypso with other rhythmic influences to create something faster and more dance-driven. Where calypso foregrounds lyrics, soca foregrounds energy and rhythm — it is the high-tempo sound that powers the road on carnival day.
