Tashia Antoine

FOUNDER & CHAIR

Spirit of Caribbean Arts (S.O.C.A.) was founded with the mission of preserving and celebrating Caribbean culture through the arts while addressing anti-Black racism and amplifying Caribbean voices. The organization emerged as a response to a critical turning point in the journey of its founder, Tashia Antoine, who has been a lifelong advocate for Caribbean arts and education.

For five years, Tashia has successfully spearheaded a vibrant children’s program, the S.O.C.A. Kids Club (formerly known as the CaribanaTM Kids Club), dedicated to introducing young participants to the carnival arts and traditions born out of the African slaves resistance to slavery such as steelpan, music, dance, and costume-making. Originally launched under a previous organization where she served as Vice Chair and Program Director, Tashia played a pivotal role in developing and expanding the program, ensuring that children had a space to learn and embrace their cultural heritage.

The program flourished, gaining support from Tropicana Community Services, Chester Le J.P.S., and Agincourt Community Services Association with previous funding garnered through the Toronto Arts Council, Foundation For Black Communities, community fundraising efforts, and local businesses that contribute to the annual mini parade day—a culminating event that allows children to showcase their skills and creativity.

Similarly, four years ago, Tashia initiated the Emancipation March, an annual event that commemorates the abolition of slavery and celebrates the resilience of Black and Caribbean communities. This march, also started under the previous organization, became a significant cultural and educational event, uniting artists, educators, and community members in a shared commitment to honoring history through artistic expression.

When the organization she had helped build decided to move in a different direction, Tashia felt compelled to ensure that these vital programs did not disappear. Refusing to let the legacy of these initiatives fade, she founded Spirit of Caribbean Arts (S.O.C.A.) to carry forward and expand their impact. Through S.O.C.A., she has continued to grow these programs, forging new partnerships and reaching even more children, families, and community members.

As S.O.C.A. moves forward, it remains dedicated to fostering cultural education, artistic expression, and community empowerment—ensuring that the rich traditions of the Caribbean continue to thrive for generations to come.
